Media Advisory - Duval Schools and the City of Jacksonville Present: Jacksonville Goes to College Week

WHAT:
Students throughout the district will participate in various activities highlighting the college entrance process and benefits of a college education during Jacksonville Goes to College Week that starts Friday, October 5 and ends Saturday, October 13.

The second annual celebration is hosted by the Jacksonville National College Fair Committee, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and Mayor Alvin Brown.

The itinerary is below:

  • Friday, October 5, 2012 - High school football teams, school bands, ROTC programs and other school groups will kick off the week-long celebration with pep rallies, halftime shows and other events that will promote school pride and post-secondary attendance.

  • Monday, October 8, 2012 - All students, DCPS employees, City of Jacksonville employees and other stakeholders are encouraged to wear attire from their alma mater or favorite college. Schools are also encouraged to decorate their doors with college materials.

  • Tuesday, October 9, 2012 - Acceleration programs and career academies will be spotlighted. High school acceleration coordinators, career academies staff, and their students will provide outreach and education on various acceleration programs and career academies available throughout the district.

    *Board members and city officials will be visiting the following schools and learning about the acceleration programs offered at each:

Terry Parker High School AVID and International Baccalaureate Program
Fletcher High School AICE
Sandalwood High School Early College
R.L. Brown Elementary School Primary Years Programme
Jefferson Davis Middle Cambridge
Frank H. Peterson Career Academy
Baldwin High School AP Honors
Mandarin High School or Middle School AICE or AVID

*City of Jacksonville Education Commissioner Dr. Donnie Horner and other city officials will visit Peterson at 10:30 a.m. and Fletcher at 12 p.m.

  • Wednesday, October 10, 2012 - All juniors and seniors are encouraged to sign up for the SAT and/or ACT during the school day and from home. Schools are encouraged to discuss with students the importance of the PSAT. Middle school students are encouraged to visit www.collegeboard.com and www.act.org to learn more about college entrance exams. Students in grades eighth-through 12th-grade can register for the college fair at www.gotomyncf.com.

  • Thursday, October 11, 2012 - Elementary school teachers are encouraged to hold discussions on the importance of college.

  • Friday, October 12, 2012 - Seniors are allowed time to complete college applications and visit the Florida Virtual Campus site to check Bright Futures eligibility. Ninth- through 11th-grade students are encouraged to explore the resources and tools that are available on the website as well. Elementary and middle school students will learn about the Bright Futures program. City officials will announce the winners of the Mayor Alvin Brown essay contest.

    *City officials and School Board members will be visiting Jefferson Davis Middle school on Friday, October 12 at 9:45 a.m.

  • Saturday, October 13, 2012 - The "Jacksonville National College Fair" is an event being held at the Prime Osborn Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Admission and parking are FREE. Eighth- through 12th-grade students are encouraged to attend with their families.

*A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology will host a kick-off rally for Jacksonville Goes to College Week from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
