Interactive Reading with the "Books Alive" Program

Winter break is almost here, but that doesn't mean learning has to stop! The Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) Office of School Programs recommends elementary students participate in the "Books Alive" Program, a free screening series from the Jacksonville Film Festival in partnership with the Jacksonville Public Library (JPL) featuring films created from children's literature.

The "Books Alive" Program encourages students to read a book, watch the corresponding film and participate in a post-screening discussion. This month's featured film, "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas," will be shown on Sunday, December 30, at 2:30 p.m. at the Main Library.

For more information about the "Books Alive" Program, visit http://jpl.coj.net/progs/main/booksalive.html.

Looking for other reading activities to keep your students' minds engaged over the holidays? The DCPS-JPL Coalition has developed a Winter Break Reading List for students in PreK through fifth grade. All books on the reading list are available throughout the public library system. Be sure to pass this list along to students, parents and other teachers.

Happy Holidays!
