Cedar Hills Elementary School Receives Grants for FCAT Writing Prep and Music Program

On October 16, the Westside Oversight Committee awarded Cedar Hills Elementary funding for two exciting new programs.

The first grant was submitted by gifted education teacher, Vicky Banks. Each Friday, from October to January, she will host a “Friday Writing Lunch Bunch,” where fourth-grade students will receive additional instruction in writing to improve their content knowledge, as well as prepare for the Florida Comprehension Assessment Test (FCAT). Funding will be used to purchase a class set of 20 Oxford Desk Dictionaries and Thesaurus’.

“We look forward to the benefits of these awards,” said Laverne Hamilton, principal of Cedar Hills Elementary. “We are excited that students now have access to a book containing synonyms and definitions for efficient management of their writing.”

Laura Cruse, a former music teacher at Cedar Hills, submitted the second grant for the “Bach to Beatles” Program. Students will enjoy this curriculum-based contracted program, arranged by Canadian composer Don Buchanan. The entire student population will have the opportunity to participate in this exciting program, which takes them through an entertaining voyage through musical history. Musical choices include Minuet in G by J.S. Bach in six different styles, Beatle’s medleys, Kenny G’s Silhouette and other contemporary saxophone sounds.

The Westside Oversight Committee is a facet of Full Service Schools, funded by United Way. The mini grants serve as a wonderful opportunity to build a valuable school and community partnership.
