In honor of Constitution Day on September 17, Mayport Middle School hosted At-large City Council Member Glorious Johnson. Constitution Day, or Citizenship Day as it is sometimes called, recognizes the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
Councilwoman Johnson met with social studies teacher John Meeks' sixth-grade world history class, and explained how the Constitution and Bill of Rights are important documents in the nation's history and essentials in understanding the rights of American citizens.
Then, on October 7, District 11 Councilman Ray Holt visited Mayport Middle to speak to Meeks’ eighth-grade U.S. History class about the 40th anniversary of consolidation and to discuss how city government works.
Both council members attended the school at the invitation of Meeks.
"I think that it is important for our young people to get to know their elected officials," said Meeks. "It's never too early for students to know the essential role they have in our political system."
Students will be taking a field trip to City Hall this winter to learn more about city government.
