Paxon School for Advanced Studies Teacher Receives Earthwatch Educator Fellowship

Paxon School for Advanced Studies science teacher Jessica Dunn was awarded an Earthwatch Educator Fellowship for the Sharks and Rays of Monterey expedition.

"I am so excited and honored to have been awarded an Earthwatch Educator Fellowship, and am looking forward to sharing this experience with my students,” said Jessica Dunn. “I think this will give them a better understanding of the type of work scientists are doing in the field, as well as get them excited about studying natural science and protecting our natural resources."

Jessica will join seven science professionals for a 10-day expedition in Monterey, California, beginning June 29. She will work with three other team members to set nets to capture sharks and rays in Elkhorn Slough and nearby areas, or head out to Monterey Bay Marine Canyon aboard a research powerboat.

Researcher Sean Van Sommeran and colleagues at the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation have worked with numerous local and national organizations to protect and preserve the elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) of Elkhorn Slough and the Monterey Bay Marine Canyon. The research is aimed to help seven species of sharks and rays recover from the devastating hunts of the mid 20th century.

The cost of the expedition is $2,620, which is being sponsored by LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest polymers, petrochemicals and fuels companies.

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that brings science to life for people concerned about the Earth's future.
