Englewood's Hologram Travels Across the Ocean

A hologram created by students at Englewood High School will be traveling to the United Kingdom for the Holography in the Modern Museum Conference on September 19 at De Montfort University, Leicester.

A hologram contains a three-dimensional image that is recorded with lasers and made entirely out of light.

In February 2008, students in Bill Pugh's Communication Technology class at Englewood recorded historical artifacts recovered from the wreck of the famous steamship Maple Leaf that sunk during the Civil War in the St. Johns River. These artifacts were provided from the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) in Jacksonville.

With the use of lasers, optics, mirrors and chemistry, the students created professional quality holograms of the artifacts that can be displayed anywhere, without fear of damaging any of the originals artifacts.

A hologram of a maple leaf artifact will be displayed at the conference, along with other holograms from museums around the world produced by world-renowned scientists, professional holographers and artists. Englewood is the only educational group invited to place a hologram in the conference's exhibit.

After the conference, the hologram will be returned to Mr. Pugh's class for display at the school.
