Spotlight On Education

Duval County Public Schools Participate in the Spirit of Giving

Many schools throughout the district have taken time out of the busy rush of the holiday season to give back to those less fortunate. Here are things some schools have done:

  • The William Raines High School PTSA served more than 65 senior citizens from the community a holiday dinner and gave everyone a fruit basket.

  • Students from Ed White High School served a meal at the Trinity Rescue Mission.

  • The Cluster I elementary principals donated more than 60 new children's books for homeless children who reside at the Sulzbacher Center.

  • The READ180 students at J.E.B. Stuart Middle spent the past few weeks collecting food and toy items, which they donated in a holiday basket to a family in need. This community service project was meant to be a valuable lesson to the students, who recently read Tsunami: Disaster of the Century, and were looking for a way to give back.

  • Fifth-grade students in Ms. Paffie's class at Greenfield Elementary made dolls to be distributed to sick children during the holidays. A representative and clown from the Shriner's Hospital visited the class to collect the dolls and speak to students about their role in helping children with illnesses.

  • The National Junior Honor Society at Kirby-Smith Middle donated more than 50 books and toys to a North Shore K-8 student whose house was destroyed by fire. They also raised $157 for the family in need.
