Paxon Students Win Engineering Competition

Paxon School for Advanced Studies took first place in both the varsity and junior varsity Jacksonville JETS Competitions at UNF on Saturday, February 23.

JETS stands for "Junior Engineering Technical Society," and it's a nationwide team competition for students in grades nine through 12 to work together to solve real-world engineering scenarios using knowledge they have learned in the classroom. Skills in mathematics and all the sciences play key roles in successful problem solving, and the competition inspires creativity, team-work, critical thinking, and peer-to-peer cooperation.

According to the JETS TEAMS Web site, this year's competition theme for students across the country is "Behind the Scenes: Engineering Athletic Events." All of the questions focus on the engineering involved in pulling off a large scale athletic event such as the Super Bowl or Olympic Games.

The members of the winning JETS teams from Paxon are as follows: Varsity - Christian Tan, Jordan Hester, Donald Chang, Miguel Bejar, Adam Gazaleh, Daoud Rana, David Hartman and Ji Ho Lee; Junior Varsity - Kelsey Cox, Rob Brice, Patrick Martin, Garrett Carter, Rick Aasen, Sean Lynch, Nityasree Srialluri and Sirisha Thambulum.

In both competitions, Stanton College Preparatory School finished second and The Bolles School finished third.
