Henry F. Kite Elementary hosted its second annual Family Literacy Day on Friday, November 14, providing parents and community members with the opportunity to visit the school to read to the students.
Literacy Day was designed by staff at Kite to encourage families to read together, with the intent to help instill a love of literature.
Guest readers visited various classrooms throughout the day, and then students participated in a book character parade around the school, proudly waving their favorite books as they walked through the halls.
Once the parade had finished, the older students returned to their classrooms to prepare for their reading roles, the ‘bigs’ reading to the ‘littles.’
Bigger students each took a book and joined their other classmates to visit the little, younger students. With their books in hand, the ‘bigs’ read on the floor and at their desks while the ‘littles’ quietly and intently listened. This reading time allowed the older students to practice their reading skills, while the younger students were taught the importance of reading by example.
