For their first-quarter service learning project, seventh-grade students at Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School collected nearly 450 new children's books to benefit the BrightStart! Dyslexia Initiative. The books will be used for dyslexic pre-schoolers in the program.
The BrightStart! Dyslexia Initiative, sponsored by Nemours Children's Clinic, identifies Pre-K children who are at risk for dyslexia. It provides universal, individualized dyslexia screening services to measure children’s critical language and print awareness skills that support reading development.
Dr. Laura Bailet, executive director of Nemours BrightStart! Dyslexia Initiative, visited Landon on October 24 and thanked students for their contributions. Following her visit, students were given the opportunity to tour the BrightStart! mobile classroom unit.
