On Tuesday, October 14, New Berlin Elementary hosted its ‘Literacy Beach Bash,’ an annual event for students, teachers and parents, promoting a creative and fun way to encourage reading.
The school’s theme this year is “Ride the Tide and Discover New Depths,” which was the focus for the night’s ocean-themed event. Throughout the evening, students traveled to seven different water-themed literacy stations that varied from creating procedural pudding cups to reading to the “Pawsitive Pets” (Maggie the Reading Dog and her canine friends).
At the "Reading Tool Bag" station, students were able to decorate their favorite colored bag, which they can use throughout the year to carry their books.
Students who visited the "Reader's Theater" created masks to encourage turning a favorite book into a fun family production at home.
It got a little messy at the "Beach Pudding Cups" station when students created edible pudding creations that showed how reading, like cooking and eating, is a part of everyday life.
Students also participated in a “Book Walk,” and had the opportunity to buy some books for $1 each.
The highlight of the evening was the display of Literacy Pumpkins, which each class had created based on a favorite book. Students voted for their favorite and the following pumpkins were chosen: first place -"Big Al" from Janice Williams and Wendy Dobson’s third-grade class; second place - "Chronicles of Narnia" by Karen Johnson's fourth graders; and third place - "Grace for President" by Trishalee Catz's fifth-grade class.
Special guest and favorite book character "Curious George" was also on hand for photo opportunities.
This is the third year New Berlin has hosted this family reading night, and Principal Deidra Johnson plans to continue it each year.
