Sallye B. Mathis Elementary Dedicates Reading Garden

On Friday, May 23, Gwen Crutchfield, principal of Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School, along with students, staff and invited guests, attended a ceremony to dedicate the school's new Reading Garden.

The event was held in the school's media center but due to limited space, only the school’s “Students of the Month” were able to attend, while other students, teachers and faculty members enjoyed the ceremony via a live television broadcast in their classrooms.

Student morning announcers, Benjamin Lee and Alexis West, welcomed guests, both in the media center and in the classrooms. They gave the morning announcements and invited the parents and guests to walk around and view student projects on display. The projects were all in line with the school’s mathematics, science and pre-engineering magnet program.

The garden was made possible by donations from several of the school’s business partners.

Karen Cameron, an employee of Wachovia Bank, donated $500 in memory of her parents. H. Trent Elson Underground Sprinkler & Landscaping donated both the labor and materials used for the irrigation system to water the garden. Members of Christ Church donated their labor to landscape the garden with plants donated by Skinner’s Nursery. The church was also responsible for applying for a grant from Lowe’s, which provided $3,400 for the beautification project.

To close the event, students in the school’s Pre-K program lined up with signs that spelled “THANK YOU.” The signs were displayed as Ms. Crutchfield thanked all of the school’s business partners for all they do to support the school.
