North Shore's MicroSociety Elects Officers

North Shore K-8, the only Duval County Public School offering the MicroSociety magnet program, hosted its first student inauguration ceremony on November 21.

MicroSociety is an innovative concept in which students from diverse backgrounds create a miniature society within the school. Children create a microcosm of the real world inside the classroom, and each child has an important role in running that world. Students are assigned jobs based on their interests, including mayor, police officers, entrepreneurs and others. As students navigate the world they've created, they come to realize the practical applications of their daily school curriculum and are empowered to take an active role in their own education.

The student body formed their student government by selecting representatives from each class to work with a facilitator on developing a constitution. After completing the constitution, representatives agreed to have a democratic society and held student elections.

During the inauguration ceremony, newly elected student officials took the oath of office and raised their new flag. Duval County Judge Gary Flower swore in student officials.
