Mock Elections Roll into Duval County Public Schools

Throughout election week, schools around the district participated in a mock presidential election to teach all students, especially the ones still too young to vote, the importance of being involved in the election process.

To prepare, students at Enterprise Learning Academy, Hyde Park, Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. and Beauclerc elementary schools spent time in the classroom learning about each candidate. Students then created voting boxes, ballots and booths to use on Election Day.

Other than selecting who they wanted to be the next President of the United States, some of the students also voted for other things, including their favorite teacher or, in the case of MLK Elementary, choosing the mural they will paint in the school’s peace garden.

"It is critical for our students to understand how important voting and being involved in the election process is," said Carolyn Blackshear, principal of MLK Elementary. "This was a historic election and this event allows the entire student body to feel as if they are part of the action."
