More DCPS Students Receive National Merit Scholarships

Eight Duval County Public Schools' (DCPS) students from Stanton College Preparatory School were among more than 1,900 additional students selected to receive college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

These students join 14 other DCPS students who were selected in the spring to receive National Merit Scholarships.

"All of the students who received scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program deserve our recognition," said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. "This is a very competitive scholarship program, and we are honored that so many of our students have earned scholarships to help them finance their post-secondary education."

This year, 194 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarships through the National Merit Program. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winner(s) from among finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program who planned to attend their institution.

The following DCPS students from Stanton College Preparatory School are the most recent students selected to receive the National Merit Scholarships:

  • Devon M. Anthony, University of Florida
  • Adam M. Butler, University of Florida
  • Amanda M. Edwards, University of Florida
  • Jacob D. Holland, University of Florida
  • Vijay V. Nayar, University of Florida
  • Terry C. Ng, University of Central Florida
  • Ganesh K. Raj, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Rojan M. Varghese, University of South Florida

This final group of winners brings the number of students selected to receive scholarships from the NMSC to approximately 8,300, which is worth a total of $36 million in scholarship funds.

The NMSC, a not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 500 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and enhancing their educational opportunities.
