Alden Road Exceptional Student Center was recently awarded a $500 grant through the Pay it Forward Foundation.
The grant, written by Barbara Green, one of the school's exceptional student education teachers, and student Ciara Lopez, will be used to fund the school's USAVE Kids Card Club 2008-2009 projects.
The purpose of the card club is to create and send four greeting cards monthly to a special group - soldiers in Iraq, nursing home patients, burn unit patients, etc. One card will be customized for the group and the other three cards are left blank and sent along with the customized card for the group to send to others, thus the grant's name, "Pay it Forward."
The Pay It Forward Foundation was established in September 2000 by author Catherine Ryan Hyde and others to educate and inspire students to realize that they can change the world, and provide them with opportunities to do so. By bringing the author's vision and related materials into classrooms internationally, students and their teachers are encouraged to formulate their own ideas of how they can pay it forward.
