Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary already has a beautiful peace garden in the school’s courtyard, but students and faculty will soon be adding a mural. However, instead of just selecting a mural, teachers wanted to emphasize the importance of voting by asking students to vote for their favorite mural design.
Five designs have been posted around the school and students will soon cast their vote for one of the following murals: an educational theme of letters, numbers and shapes; a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking to a crowd at a Washington D.C. mall; an image of a peaceful garden; pictures of art and music-themed students; or various nature patterns.
Once the winning mural is chosen, the Art Club will paint the winning design under the direction of Mrs. Isabelle, the school’s art teacher.
“Providing our students with the opportunity to vote on a mural design not only teaches the importance of voting, but also allows everyone to be involved in the project in some way,” said Principal Carolyn Blackshear.
