Emily Whitbeck, a ninth-grade student at Stanton College Preparatory School, has been selected as the first runner-up in the National Poison Prevention Week 2008 Poster Contest (older youth division).
The contest is sponsored by the National Poison Prevention Week Council, in conjunction with the American Association of Poison Control Centers, as part of a year-round effort to educate communities about ways to prevent accidental poisonings in the home. It is open to two groups, children ages eight and under (younger division) and children ages nine to 13 (older division).
Emily created the poster last year when she attended James Weldon Johnson Middle School, and it was selected from entries that were submitted to local poison centers throughout the country. Her poster creatively illustrated the message to prevent poisonings around the home.
Emily, along with other students who participated in the poster contest, was recognized at a reception sponsored by the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center-Jacksonville.
National Poison Prevention Week, the third week in March each year, is a week nationally designated to highlight the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the 61 Poison Control Centers across the country. For additional information on the poster contest and steps the public can take to help prevent accidental poisonings, visit the council's Web site at www.poisonprevention.org.
