Race for Reading

Reading became a racing adventure at Twin Lakes Academy Elementary on Valentine's Day when Principal Debbie L. Menard and City Councilman Art Graham competed in the Publix Twin 500.

The race consisted of one lap around the bus circle and six pit stops during which the principal and councilman picked up 500 books each, using two race car shopping carts donated by Publix. Menard was race car #5 and Councilman Graham was #32.

Students made signs and were cheering for their favorite race car driver. The race was very close, but Menard crossed the finish line first. Councilman Graham said he wants a rematch and expects to win next year.

This was a culmination to a competition where students had two weeks to read as many books as possible. Students asked sponsors to pay for every book they read, and more than $7,000 was collected. Half of the money will go to the PTA and the other half to the class that generated the money to purchase more classroom library books.

Menard said her students really enjoyed the race, and she hopes they will continue reading as they race to success.
