Don Brewer Elementary kicked off its new reading program,
Reading Buds With The Dolphins, on September 29 with a visit from more than 50 student athletes from Jacksonville University (JU).
With the help of its PTA, the school has formed a relationship with the JU Dolphins football team, providing college athletes with the opportunity to give back to the community by reading to the elementary students, and providing students with mentors who encourage and support reading.
Don Brewer Elementary Principal Marianne Lee, and its instructional coach, Janet Brown, worked with the JU football organization to formulate a plan that would involve the community in the success of their neighborhood school, and energize and excite students in their pursuit of academic achievement.
“Reading is a fundamental educational building block,” said Principal Marianne Lee. “Our school’s theme is ‘Where Great Minds Grow and Students Bloom,’ and this program represents both new and continued growth.”
The players will visit the school throughout the year, and the success of the program will be measured by Mrs. Brown and other staff members.
The Don Brewer Elementary PTA plans to expand the program to involve other community entities, and wants to continue the growth of these valuable partnerships.
