Central Riverside Elementary recently sold nearly $4,000 worth of books to their students and families during its book fair, with a third of the sales occurring during family night. For having only 400 children in grades K-5, this was almost double the projections for a school of its size.
"What an amazing commitment to learning from our families who show that reading is a priority in spite of the holiday season and the difficult economic times," said Media Specialist Pam Picray.
The school also had help from the Omega Psi Phi fraternity at Edward Waters College. Thanks to the fraternity president, Yaqoob Thurston, the chapter adopted the school for the week as a service project and sent six to eight volunteers each day to assist the students as they shopped. Members of the football, track and golf teams, and other students representing the fraternity, as well as some of their friends, were all on hand to support the school.
Throughout the week, friendships began developing between the students and volunteers, and Omega Psi Phi has agreed to begin a mentoring/tutoring program at the school in January.
