Earlier this month, students from Duval County’s Academies of Technology, Frank H. Peterson and A. Philip Randolph, were the winners of 32 medals at the 2008 Florida SkillsUSA Skills and Leadership Conference.
Fourteen of the 32 winners received first-place medals. All first-place winners will move on to compete in the National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City, Missouri, June 22-28. The official t-shirt design for the national conference was created by Maya de Ceano-Vivas, a senior in Frank H. Peterson’s commercial art program.
Wilson Navarro, also a student at Frank H. Peterson, was elected as the 2008-2009 State SkillsUSA Parliamentarian. Wilson will join the first-place winners in Kansas City, as a member of the national Courtesy Corps.
The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2008, there will be more than 5,000 contestants in 93 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management will make the national event possible.
