John N.C. Stockton Elementary School hosted Career Day on Wednesday, September 24, providing students with the opportunity to hear from speakers in various careers.
Students prepared for the event by completing information sheets about which careers they were most interested in. As they heard from speakers, they rated the careers based on how likely they would be to enter that field.
Guest speakers included employees in the fields of nursing, forestry, education, construction, banking, business ownership, information technology and medicine, as well as from various branches of the military. Students also heard from members of the political community, including Jacksonville City Council Chairman Ronnie Fussell, Duval County Tax Collector Mike Hogan and a local lobbyist.
Members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department made a special trip to Stockton to explain to students what it’s really like to be a firefighter and to show them their fire equipment, including their protective gear and fire truck. Students even had the chance to walk inside the fire truck.
"Hosting Career Day is very important, and it's a day our students really enjoy," said Assistant Principal Jennifer Collins. "Being exposed to a wide variety of careers helps them better understand the purpose for why they are in school."
