On Tuesday, April 29, the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts orchestra, along with the orchestras at Brentwood Elementary, Pine Forest Elementary and LaVilla School of the Arts, will perform Strings on the River at 7 p.m. at Jacoby Symphony Hall in the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.
More than 300 student-musicians will participate in the evening concert that culminates with all four orchestras performing America the Beautiful.
Ruxandra Marquardt, principal second violinist with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, will be the concert’s special guest. Ms. Marquardt brings an international reputation to the annual event, having performed and recorded all over Europe and the United States.
Strings on the River was started in 1997 by Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Orchestra Conductor Brian Griffin. The event, which was first housed in the school's gym and became so large that it moved to the Times-Union Center, has raised more than $20,000 to fund summer music camp scholarships and support for student-musicians.
Chief sponsors of this year's Strings on the River are Winn-Dixie, The Haskell Company, and Southwest Strings. Additional support is being provided by BB&T and Sysco Foods.
