Paxon Student Completes UF Science Training Program

This summer, Kelsey Cox, a student at Paxon School for Advanced Studies, successfully completed the University of Florida's Student Science Training Program (UF-SSTP).

UF-SSTP is a seven-week residential research program for up to 100 selected rising seniors and qualified rising juniors who are considering medicine, math, computer, science or engineering careers.

For the duration of the program, students live in residence halls on campus while they attend lectures, seminars and workshops on current topics.

During the program, Kelsey worked under the supervision of Dr. Mark Segal on a research project entitled “The Effect of Angiotensins on Endothelial Progenitor Cells and CD34+ Cells.” She also completed a three-credit hour Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar, “Research Design of Human and Animal Models,” and earned an ‘A.’

For mid-term assessment, Kelsey was required to give a presentation based on her work, as well as submit a research paper and poster. At the conclusion of the program, Kelsey received a Top 20 Oral Presentation Certificate and a Certificate of Distinction.

UF-SSTP is administered by the Center for Precollegiate Education and Training, and is in its 50th year. More than 3,000 academically talented students from around the world have completed this rigorous summer residential research program since its inception.
