Students, faculty members and parents from West Jacksonville Elementary celebrated its 2008 FCAT grade score improvement from a 'C' to an 'A' (the first A in the school's history) by hosting a block party celebration on August 29. Additionally, students who achieved a Level 5 on any portion of the FCAT were treated to a limousine ride around Jacksonville.
During the limousine ride, students visited the district building, Adventure Landing and Chuck E. Cheese. When they arrived at the district office, Duval County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Pat Willis congratulated students and presented them with certificates of achievement.
After the ride around the city, students returned to school for the block party celebration, which recognized students and teachers for their dedication to academic improvement.
"For this school that was once an 'F' to move forward to an 'A' is truly something uplifting, not only for the students and staff, but also for this neighborhood," said Principal Michele Floyd-Hatcher. "I applaud our students and teachers for all of their hard work."
The event was sponsored by the school's business partner for the past three years, Drive Time, along with the PTA.
