Mayport Elementary Selected as Florida Title I Distinguished School

The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) recently selected Mayport Elementary as a Florida Title I Distinguished School for making the greatest progress toward closing the achievement gap in reading and mathematics for the 2006/07 and 2007/08 school years.

"Mayport Elementary is an example to other Title I schools of innovative and creative educational techniques," said FLDOE Commissioner Dr. Eric Smith. "They are to be congratulated for their excellence and commitment to improving the academic achievement of all students in the school. This represents the best in the state’s effort to promote student success."

Schools selected as a distinguished school must demonstrate strengths in the following areas: opportunity for all children to meet proficient and advanced levels of academic performance; strong professional development; coordination with other programs; curriculum and instruction to support achievement at high standards; and partnerships among schools, parents and communities.

The FLDOE will choose two of the Florida Title I Distinguished Schools to represent the state at the National Title I Conference in February in San Antonio, Texas.
