Duval County Students Participate in Latin Forum

Duval County students recently participated in the 46th Annual Convention of the Northeast Florida Classical Association. This Latin Forum was held at The Bolles School, with more than 400 students participating from the public and private sector.

The event began with a testing session, including grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, derivatives, history, literature, geography, art and knowledge of mythology customs.

Following the testing was a costume competition, and student art work in a variety of categories was on display and judged in the library.

Students also had the opportunity to participate in Olympic-themed events, such as a softball and javelin throw, broad jump and distance run. Other competitions included a chariot race and Latin I and II Certamen, which is a quiz-style event with questions about Latin grammar and language, and Roman history and culture.

The event concluded with an awards assembly. Duval County students received top recognition and won first place in a majority of the categories.

Dr. Joanne Davis, Duval County Public Schools' supervisor of world languages, served as one of the judges for the event.

"An extraordinary event like this, which focuses on scholarly, artistic and athletic competition, is a wonderful source of inspiration for all of the participants. Student achievement in every category was extremely impressive."

Other educators in attendance to support the DCPS' students included Marie Girardeau, Janice Lee, Ryan Moorhead, Ritchie Raulerson, Evan Kell, Francine Rode and Liz Gentry.
