Students Hunt for Math Treasures at New Berlin

Students at New Berlin Elementary traveled a creative and exciting road to math discovery when their school hosted The Great Math Treasure Hunt on the evening of February 19.

Upon arriving at school, students received a treasure map to complete as they visited the various math stations. The stations, inspired by the school's theme for the year "Ride the Tide and Dive in Deep," included Pattern Island, Fishing for Numbers, Polygon Pirate Ships, Shapes That Pop and Pattern Hunt. Those who completed the treasure map received a no homework pass.

Students also enjoyed a visit from Maggie the Reading Dog. Maggie "read" the children math-related literature, and parents were given math strategies and Web sites to take home.

New Berlin's brand new full-life mascot "Champ the Bear" was introduced for the first time at the event. In the past, this mascot only has been seen in the form of a drawing, but his new costume brought him to life in front of the students.

Every year, the Math Family Night at New Berlin Elementary takes on a different theme. This is the first treasure-related family night the school has hosted.
