Ed White High School senior Alexis Gill has received the 2009 National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing.
The award, sponsored by Bank of America and the NCWIT, recognizes young high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology.
A total of 32 award winners were selected from high schools across the country for their outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history and plans for post-secondary education.
As part of the award, Alexis will receive $500, a laptop computer, a trip to attend the Bank of America Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony in March in Charlotte, North Carolina, and an engraved award for both her and her school.
"All of us at Ed White High are proud of Alexis for being selected to receive this prestigious award," said Principal Jim Clark. "Her achievements make us proud, and encourage her classmates to succeed and do the same."
Ed White continues to offer computing as part of its curriculum, recognizing its value to a student's well-rounded course load.
"Courses such as digital design, computing for college and careers, and business software applications prepare students for positions in our fast-changing multi-media workforce," said the school's guidance counselor Libby Curran.
The National Center for Women & Information Technology is a coalition of over 170 prominent corporations, academic institutions, government agencies and nonprofits working to improve U.S. innovation, competitiveness, and workforce sustainability by increasing women's participation in information technology.
