Spotlight On Education

Arlington Elementary Students Recognize Black History Month

To celebrate and learn about Black History Month, students and staff at Arlington Elementary participated in a variety of fun and educational activities.

Every afternoon throughout the month, a student read a short biography about a famous African American over the intercom for the school’s “Who Am I?” segment, providing every student with the opportunity to learn about that notable figure. Once the biography was read, students had to guess who the person was, and five winners were selected every afternoon from the pool of correct answers to receive a prize.

Classrooms throughout the school participated in a door decorating contest, and the winning classes received a pizza party. Doors were decorated in honor of figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and Tiger Woods. The winners from the primary grades were: first place - Mrs. Dean/Ms. Long, second place - Ms. Sparman, and third place - Mrs. Rogers. The winners from the intermediate grades were: first place - Mrs. Hall, second place - Mrs. Roche, and third place - Mrs. Peel.

Students also participated in a ‘Dress for Success’ day and a “Hats Off Day” for Black History Month. Several classes were visited by their principal, Paula Smith, who spent time reading books to the students about famous African Americans and significant events in Black history.
