As part of an ongoing effort to promote literacy and an enjoyment of reading, Merrill Road Elementary hosted Literacy Week from March 9-13 with a variety of fun and educational events that got the entire school excited about reading.
On Monday, students celebrated the March birthday of Dr. Seuss by reading some of his well-known children's books and eating cake.
The next day, everyone gathered in the media center for a book fair. Students had the opportunity to purchase their favorite books, and received special reading stickers.
Notable figures from a wide variety of books, movies and television shows filled the halls of Merrill Road on Wednesday when students, faculty and staff came dressed as their favorite characters. Walking around the school were the Three Blind Mice, Officer Buckle & Gloria, the Cat in the Hat, Scooby Doo, Minnie Mouse and many others.
Local author Jennifer Swanson stopped by on Thursday to read her book,
Penny and Rio: The Mysterious Backyard Meeting. She also participated in reading workshops with parents during that evening's Literacy Night, held in the school's cafeteria. During the night program, teachers hosted literacy sessions about topics such as non-fiction books, folk tales, art as it relates to literacy and reading intervention strategies.
To end the week, Selinda Keyes, Duval County Public Schools' Chief Officer of Elementary Education for Cluster 2, visited the Mustang News studio on Friday for a storytelling segment that was broadcast live to the entire school.
