A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology recently held a special induction ceremony for a new organization at the school, the Gentlemen of Randolph.
Organized and sponsored by teacher Johnnie Miller, Jr., the Gentlemen of Randolph organization focuses on bringing a group of young men from different backgrounds together to assist them with becoming better gentlemen through manners, style, etiquette, integrity, academics and respect.
During the induction ceremony, held before the entire school, each Gentlemen of Randolph was asked to introduce himself and tell the audience his philosophy in life.
President Johnny Howard said, "My passion is to live a life of integrity, because it's the right thing to do."
His mother, Michelle Howard, said that Johnny has been excited about all he has learned so far from the Gentlemen of Randolph program.
"It has been a wonderful experience for Johnny. He comes home from school excited about everything that is going on with this group of men, and he looks forward to everything they will learn and do together."
Howard, along with his fellow Gentlemen, gave a single rose to a person in the audience who had made a significant impact in their lives.
Sponsor Johnnie Miller and the students prepared for the induction weeks before by conducting lessons in subjects such as etiquette, integrity and manners.
"I am excited about the change I am seeing in these students, and about the change that I know will come," said Miller. "It's thrilling to work with individuals who are willing to experience change, and have the idea of change on their minds and hearts. For these students, the sky is the limit."
In front of their entire school, as well as parents and family members, the students took an oath to work hard to become true gentlemen, make a positive impact to those around the world, and to be respectful to their teachers, parents, other adults and peers.
Miller encouraged everyone in the audience to be open and willing to change their lives for the better.
"Change starts with you. If not you, then who?"
"I am so thankful for Mr. Miller and the others at our school who are committed to the Gentlemen of Randolph organization," said Principal Rhonda Motley. "These students will grow up to be true men and leaders in this society."
Miller plans to induct new students into the group each year, and those in the group from previous years will act as teachers, mentors and leaders to the new inductees.
