Students from Ms. Johnson's and Ms. Crawford's Intellectual Disability classes at Crystal Springs Elementary, along with their Physical Education (P.E.) teacher Scott Adolf, recently enjoyed a bowling field trip to Jax Lanes West.
Ms. Johnson and Ms. Crawford teach their students a community-based education, and bowling is an age-appropriate activity that they can enjoy, while also learning functional skills.
"Not only do the students learn to properly hold and release the bowling ball, they also learn to order the correct shoe
size, pay for their games and wait patiently for their turn," said Johnson.
Before heading out to the real bowling lanes, students practice bowling in their regular class, as well as in their P.E. class with Mr. Adolf.
"As a P.E. teacher, it is one of my goals to promote a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of fitness," said Adolf. "Bowling is an activity that these students can participate in for the rest of their lives, plus it’s an additional opportunity for them to socialize and interact within our society."
Other than taking bowling trips, this year the students have also visited Publix, Wal-Mart and a fast-food restaurant to practice the functional life skills they learn in class.
