Students from Mandarin High School and Stanton College Preparatory School recently spent a weekend at the Summerlin Academy in Bartow, Florida participating in the Fourth Annual Florida State Chinese Competition.

The students, who are currently enrolled in Chinese I, II and III, competed in the categories of speaking, writing, reading and Chinese culture. They also had the option to participate in a Jeopardy-style tournament and a performance-based competition.
The students attained exceptional levels of achievement, including five Superiors (the highest level of recognition in the contest), six Excellents, four Outstandings and 14 Goods in the various categories.
Several guest Chinese teachers accompanied the students: Guo Xiao Yang, Shuzhi Yan and Qian Ying, as well as Qin Li who is the permanent teacher at Mandarin High School.
"The Chinese language program is relatively new for Duval County Public Schools' (DCPS) students and this was the first time they had the opportunity to attend the competition," said Dr. Joanne Davis, DCPS Supervisor of World Languages. "This impressive accomplishment indicates the high level of mastery that our students have already attained."
