River City Science Academy Celebrates International Night

River City Science Academy (RCSA) recently hosted its annual International Night, an evening celebrating people, culture and acceptance.

"River City Science students, parents and staff come from various cities and countries, so we like to join together and share in our diversity," said Principal Dr. Dogan Tozoglu. "International Night is an important way for our school to help spread cultural awareness and acceptance. When we can all come together without racial, religious or cultural adversity, it produces a more cohesive and comfortable learning environment suitable for all students."

The RCSA Parent Volunteer Organization, as well as staff, other parents and students worked together to make International Night a success. Parents and staff prepared some of their favorite recipes or brought food items representing their culture. Students gathered various items synonymous with the international theme of their homerooms to create baskets for a silent auction.

The main event of the evening was a talent show that showcased River City Science's brilliant singers, dancers, and musicians. A winner from each category and grade level was selected. First prize was awarded to Killian Chamberlain for his electric guitar performance from the musical band, Disturbed. Second prize was awarded to Courtney Dorrian for her vocal performance of It's Your Life by Francesca Battistelli. Third prize was awarded to Salko Odzakovic for his break dancing to MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This.

In addition to the competitions, the Turkish Olympiad Team sang and performed Turkish songs and poems. The group will soon be competing in Atlanta, Georgia.

This is the second year River City Science Academy has hosted the event, and everyone is looking forward to participating again next year.
