DCPS' Middle Schools Participate in Florida Math League Contest

Students from three Duval County Public Schools - River City Science Academy (RCSA), James Weldon Johnson Middle and Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School – recently participated in the regional Florida Math League contest.

Math League contests, which are held throughout the country for more than one million students each year, are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level with contest questions from different areas of mathematics. The goal is to encourage student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving worthwhile problems.

This year's competition for Region 1 consisted of Duval, Alachua and Marion counties.

Sixth-Grade Results
In the sixth-grade regional category, James Weldon Johnson and Landon tied for second, and RCSA received fourth place.

Individually, RCSA sixth-grade students Joseph C. and Daniel B. tied for first place in the region.

Out of 80 schools in the state level ranking, James Weldon Johnson and Landon tied for 10th, and the RCSA sixth-grade team placed 17th.

Seventh-Grade Results
The RCSA seventh-grade math team received second place in the Region 1 division, while the James Weldon Johnson and Landon teams placed third and fourth.

RCSA seventh-graders Anthony F. and Travis G. place first and third in the region, respectively.

From the 74 schools in the seventh-grade state level ranking, RCSA placed sixth, while James Weldon Johnson placed 15th and Landon came in at 23rd.

Eighth-Grade Results
In the eighth-grade regional results, Landon placed second, James Weldon Johnson placed third, and RCSA fourth.

Eighth-grade Landon student Madison L. tied for third place in the region.

At the state level ranking of 67 schools, the Landon team placed 11th, while James Weldon Johnson and RSCA placed 16th and 18th, respectively.
