More than 30 students from Landmark and Twin Lakes Academy middle schools recently represented Duval County Public Schools at the Florida Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando.
The Technology Student Association (TSA) provides programs and activities to enhance a school's technology education program. Students learn problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills as they relate to various technology fields, such as transportation, communications and engineering.
Landmark and Twin Lakes are the only middle schools in the district who are members of TSA, and they have been participating in the association for five years.
To prepare for competitions, students meet one hour each week during the school year to complete technology challenges.
During the conference, which was attended by 30 middle schools from throughout the state, students competed in categories such as technical writing, electrical application, prepared speech and flight design.
The students from Landmark placed in the top 10 of 13 categories, while the Twin Lakes team entered 18 categories and placed in the top 10 for nine of them. Every student who competed made it to the finalist level for every one of their events, and all of them competed in three events or more.
Twin Lakes Middle student Sharria W. earned a second-place trophy in the technical writing category.
The Landmark TSA team is led by Mr. Hines, Mr. Evans, Mrs. Donigan and Ms. Gaulier, and teacher Ms. Austin oversees the Twin Lakes team. The students on this year's teams are as follows:
