North Shore K-8 MicroSociety Magnet School recently held the first annual "Miss North Shore" Pageant.
The theme of the pageant, which was hosted by the school's safety patrol, was "Believe in the Magic That's Inside Your Heart." Additionally, many of the songs played during the pageant, as well as the set design, surrounded the theme of the 1978 musical
The Wiz, starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor.
The Saturday before the pageant, the contestants - 10 female students in the fourth to sixth grades - were treated to a Princess Tea Party. During their tea, the students made "All About Me" collages and took pictures for the Miss Photogenic award.
During the pageant, an evening program held in the multi-purpose room, the students competed in casual and formal wear events, as well as a talent competition. Talents presented included singing, dancing and dramatic oration.
At the end of the evening, Breana C. was crowned Miss North Shore. Dametrius B. and Alexis B. were awarded the first and second runner-up ribbons, respectively. Alexis was also named Miss Photogenic, and Breana C. was named Miss Loyalty for bringing in the most ad revenue. Jaleria B. was recognized for having the best "All About Me" collage.
Judges for the pageant were Christina A., a junior dance major at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts; Irvin Pedro, the program manager for the New Town Success Zone by the Jacksonville Children's Commission; and Tiffany Lewis, an alumni of Stanton College Preparatory School who is now a graduate student at Florida State University majoring in Integrated Marketing Communication.
Mrs. Tyrica Young and Officer Richard Hendley served as the mistress and mastery of ceremony.
