Oceanway Students Participate in Annual Geography Fair

More than 200 seventh-grade students from Oceanway Middle School had the opportunity to research and present on countries around the world for the school's annual Geography Fair.

Students set up tables with backboards they had designed, and answered questions about the country they had chosen for students, parents, faculty and community members. Different types of food from the various countries were prepared by the students, and many of the presenters dressed in clothing the country's natives would regularly wear.

Students Taylor M. and Haley B. earned the top spot at this year's fair for their research and presentation about Tanzania. Second place went to Jordan B. for a presentation about South Korea, and Kristen D. picked up a third-place trophy for Romania.

"I want to congratulate all of the students who participated at the Geography Fair, and also thank the parents for their hard work in assisting their children with the projects," said Ty Rogers, a geography teacher at Oceanway. "The quality of the projects and knowledge of our students surpassed all expectations."

Rogers began the Geography Fair at Oceanway during the 2007-2008 school year, and he says the idea to host a fair is gaining popularity throughout the district, with other schools now planning to host one of their own next year.
