Title I Pre-K Teachers Prepare to Read for the Record

More than 20 Title I Pre-K teachers are preparing to participate in the Pearson Foundation's Jumpstart Read for the Record event, Thursday, October 8.

During the Read for the Record event, hundreds of Duval County Pre-K and Kindergarten students will join thousands of people around the world as teachers, celebrities and local officials read Eric Carle's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle's book was chosen as this year's signature book to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

To prepare for the big day, Lisa Wells, district literacy coach, talked to the teachers about the importance of the event, gave background information on the book and showed the teachers how to create sock puppets to be used while the book is read.

To kick off the festivities, Duval County Public Schools' (DCPS) Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals will read to parents and students at the Sallye B. Mathis Parent Involvement Center (PIC).

Later in the day, a Spanish version of Carle's book will be read to Pre-K and Kindergarten students enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program at John E. Ford K-8. The star reader for this event is Eli Rodriguez, a 10th grader at Forrest High School.

Eli was chosen to participate because of his involvement in DCPS' World Languages Department's Little Language Learners Service-Learning Project, where high school students and teachers promote language learning to students in elementary school.

PIC parent liaisons will facilitate Jumpstart Read for the Record at various DCPS Title I Pre-K locations. The readings have been scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to ensure parents are able to participate.
