Loretto Elementary recently held its kick-off event for the Principal's Book Challenge during two school assemblies.
During the assemblies, Principal Christopher Begley dressed as a worm, "Begley's Bookworm," and reminded students and staff of their 2009-2010 reading goal: students should read a total of 135,000 books and faculty, 1,000.
At the end of the school year during a special reading week, Begley's Bookworm will reappear and read the Diary of a Worm to the students who have met their goal. Then he will have to sit in a small pool filled with dirt and live worms! Begley, who is a little worried about whether or not the worms bite humans, even Googled it to make sure he would be safe.
This is the first year Loretto is having a book challenge, and the students and staff are excited about this year-long goal. Teachers are reminding the students that "reading is the key that will open all other doors."
