Spotlight On Education

A Million Words at Sadie T. Tillis Elementary

Students at Sadie T. Tillis Elementary recently kicked off the school-wide launch of their Million Word Reading Campaign.

"We are challenging our students to read a million words during the course of this school year," said Principal Jennifer Copeland. "We want our students to know how important reading is, and this event is one way to get them excited about reading."

The entire student body gathered in front of the school with their teachers and several special guests, and began the event with the presentation of colors and raising of the flags by the Forrest High School JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps).

Principal Copeland and her staff invited the Forrest High School band, drill team and JROTC to Sadie Tillis to get the students pumped up for the event.

After hearing a selection of music by the Forrest Band, students presented their class cheers with pride, shouting why their grade would read the most books. Teachers from every grade level, who were dressed as their favorite book character, helped the students with their cheers.

If the students meet their challenge, Principal Copeland has a special surprise for them at the end of the year. In each classroom, there are posters that will document how well the students are doing in reaching their reading goal.
