Community and Alumni Visit Raines High School for Evening Celebration

William M. Raines High School recently hosted their Community Night and Homecoming Celebration for parents, alumni and the local community.

At the beginning of the evening, Principal George Maxey welcomed guests and introduced the Raines Band and Choir, who performed a variety of songs, including the school's Alma Mater.

Tangela Ennis, the school's activities director, introduced the audience to the 2009 Homecoming Court contestants. Winners will be announced during the Homecoming game on October 29.

After the performances and announcement of Homecoming candidates, everyone gathered in the cafeteria for dinner, provided by Olive Garden. Visitors had the opportunity to speak with local vendors, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the YMCA, the Jacksonville Commitment Scholarship Program and the Jacksonville Urban League.

"We are thankful that our local community, parents and alumni are here tonight to support Raines High School," said Principal Maxey. "Their involvement with our school and students means so much to us."

After this week's Homecoming activities, the Northwest Classic – Raines vs. Ribault football game – will be on Saturday, November 7. Gates open at 12:30 p.m., and the game starts at 2.

Leading up to the game will be a series of events, including: the alumni and faculty basketball game on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Ribault; the faculty volleyball game on Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.; the Growl celebration event on Nov. 4 in Ribault's cafeteria at 6:30 p.m.; the talent/fashion show on Nov. 5 in Ribault's auditorium at 6 p.m.; and the Raines bonfire on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. on the football practice field.

Before Saturday's football game, there will be a parade in the morning, starting at 10 a.m., at the Shoppes of Sherwood.
