Spotlight On Education

Author Captivates Stockton Elementary Students

Mary Jane Hayes, author of Emma's House of Sound, recently came to share her story and talents with the students of John Stockton Elementary.

In addition to the students and teachers, district representatives and School Board Chairman Tommy Hazouri also visited the school to hear from the local author.

According to Joye Madison, Stockton's technology coordinator, awareness, acceptance and love were the themes of the event.

"The children were totally captivated with the idea of living without sounds," said Madison. "They also came to realize that we are all different in one way or another, so deafness is just one way we can be different."

Students designated as the top readers in their grade level had the opportunity to have lunch with Ms. Hayes.

The students and staff of John Stockton Elementary thank Mary Jane Hayes for making Stockton a more compassionate place.
