North Shore Students Take the FEAR out of the FCAT

The faculty and staff of North Shore K-8 recently hosted 'Fright Night,' where students and their families were given helpful tricks and treats to be successful on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

"Being a Title I School, parent involvement is very important to the success of both the students and the school," said Paula Walton, Title I Parent Involvement Specialist. "This event empowers our parents with resources that support their child’s success, while allowing them to be an active partner in the education process."

Students and their families worked their way through five interactive sessions while learning helpful tips designed to take the fear out of the dreaded test.

The breakout sessions included math, reading, science, technology and writing.

During the math session, parents and students played a fun-filled, interactive game of Jeopardy, and received prizes for all correct answers.

In the technology session, parents learned about the district's new Oncourse Parent Portal where they can view their child's grades, attendance and much more.

They also received a handy educational technology resource guide that provided information on several Web sites, including FCAT Explorer, Destination Success and Nettrekker, an educational search engine with multiple student tools.

After working their way through all of the sessions, students, dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes, went trick or treating through the halls of the school.
