Duval County Students Participate in Latin Forum

More than 450 students from 11 schools throughout Duval County recently participated in the Northeast Florida Classical Association Regional Latin Forum at The Bolles School.

During the event, students competed in categories including reading composition, prose and poetry, mythology and classical geography. Students were tested on their knowledge of Latin literature and history, vocabulary, phrases and mottos.

Students also had the opportunity to participate in Olympic-themed events, such as a discus throw, broad jump, Nerf javelin and distance run.

Other competitions included Certamen, which is a quiz-style event with questions about Latin grammar and language, costume design, art and sculpture, and even a chariot race.

The following officers were elected during the forum: Consul Aganya Agwa, Paxon School For Advanced Studies; Proconsul Sam Leach, Stanton College Preparatory School; Scriba Primus Nicole Sweeney, Fletcher High School; Pontifex Maximus, Bolles Middle; and Mya Nguyen, Bolles Upper.

The event concluded with an awards assembly. Duval County Public Schools’ students received top recognition and won first place in almost every category.
