Magic and Art Come to Alden Road Exceptional Student Center

Magician Kevin Spencer from Hocus Focus recently joined the students and staff at Alden Road Exceptional Student Center for a wonderful time of entertainment.

Spencer taught the students a few magic tricks that they then in turn tried to show their classmates. The students had a great time laughing and demonstrating their newly found talents with each other.

After the students left, Spencer spent some time with the faculty, showing them how the use of magic and sleight of hand can be a very useful instructional tool.

On his blog at www.spencersmagic.com, Spencer commented about his visit to Alden Road.

"Today was the most special day and one that I'm sure I'm not going to be able to put into adequate words. I had the privilege of working with some of the most exceptional students I’ve ever worked with – the students of Alden Road Exceptional Student Center. I spent the morning with Ethan and Alan teaching magic tricks to students with exceptionalities – physical and mental challenges that would dampen the spirit of most of us. Yet, somehow, these kids were filled with life and laugher that was only magnified with the mastery of each trick."

Also recently stopping by Alden Road was Tim Bullard, a ceramic artist affiliated with Artworks. Bullard helped one of the classes with their 'Tree of Life' project, a soon-to-be permanent fixture in the school's front office. Students have been molding and glazing the leaves and branches, and Bullard taught the students about the effects of heat on clay and the benefits of cooperative teamwork.
