Spotlight On Education

Super Science Saturday at Greenfield Elementary

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Greenfield Elementary recently celebrated their third annual Super Science Saturday where they were immersed in experiments, demonstrations and hands-on activities in the various disciplines of science.

Students discovered the wondrous properties of oobleck (a green precipitation invented by children's author Dr. Seuss), built a self-sustaining biosphere, learned the science of lava lamps and even built a comet complete with frozen gas bubbles.

Each year, fifth-grade students are required to take the science FCAT, measuring their knowledge of science standards covered from kindergarten through fifth grade. Super Science Saturday has become a tradition at Greenfield to get the students better prepared for the test in an exciting and interactive way.

Assistant Principal Jeff Royal said the community support for the event was tremendous. Volunteers from University of North Florida, City of Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services and Evergladesplan.org, as well as several of Greenfield’s parents, worked with students to review the state’s educational science standards in a fun way.

The day wrapped up with lunch provided by the Tinseltown Chick-fil-A for volunteers and the school’s PTA for the students. Students left with an excitement for science and a better understanding of the world around them.
