District Renews Food Service Contract with Chartwells

Duval County Public Schools and the School Board recently recommended a one-year renewal for Chartwells Dining Services, our schools’ food service provider, based on the company’s superior service in schools, astute business planning and contract compliance.

According to assessments, such as climate and operations surveys, performance by Chartwells has been exceptional. Feedback from schools about the quality of food has been positive, improving from a score of 3.40 in November 2008 (prior to Chartwells contract) to 4.07 in December 2009. (Scoring based on a five-point scale.)

Chartwells has improved the nutritious meal options students are receiving at school, providing items such as whole grain breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, many baked items instead of fried, and snacks that are low in fat and salt. They have placed a greater emphasis on students eating regular menu meals, which are more balanced, than a la carte items.

Since becoming the food service provider for the district, Chartwells has been actively involved in creating school and community partnerships, including donating $20,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank Backpack program; supporting events at various schools; providing a chef to assist culinary students from Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology; and working with the NFL on “Fuel Up To Play 60” to encourage healthy eating and daily exercise.

Chartwells has also established a Wellness Committee as a part of the School Health Advisory Council. Committee members tour schools during meal times and observe food service procedures and practices.
